Mary Headlam began to create illustrations to the fairy tales of the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) in the early 1900s. At this time, she contributed illustrations to fairy tale anthologies and annuals, such as The Magic City and Other Fairy Tales (1903) by Netta Syrett (1865-1943) and The Dream Garden (1905), edited by Syrett. Andersen’s stories gained widespread popularity in Britain as they started to be translated into English from the 1840s for a growing children’s market, although Andersen intended a readership of all ages.
