Through his label, Margiela challenged traditional ideas of luxury with his avant-garde, experimental and deconstructed designs and a disruptive approach to presenting his collections in unusual settings. His designs often incorporated unconventional materials, experimental construction and elements that appeared unfinished. ","physicalDescription":"The skirt is made from a length of fine black wool and is constructed as an ankle length, A-line wrap skirt. There are two small darts at the back of skirt. A waistband of black tape is stitched to the only the back of the skirt and fastens on the wearer's left side with two hook and eye fastenings. The overlapping front panels of the skirt are not attached to the waist band and can either be left to fall from the side, tucked into the waistband, or - as styled in the original look from the Autumn/Winter 1997 show - pinned to the accompanying bodice. The top front panel of the skirt features the selvedge of the fabric, which reads in woven gold lettering 'MADE IN BIELLA x LANE TASMANIA x SUPER 100'S', denoting the location that it was woven, the origin of the wool it is made of, and the quality (weight, fineness) of the woven wool. Many of the looks included a bodice replicating the canvas cover of a traditional tailor’s or dressmaker’s ‘Stockman’ form, fastened at the front with hooks and eyes and complete with the size and maker stamped lettering. Margiela paired these workroom-inspired bodices with garments that appeared to be in the process of being made. This skirt is constructed from a bolt of fine woven wool suiting fabric. It fastens at the waist with a length of black tape which is only attached to a portion of the skirt fabric, leaving the section that wraps across the front of the body to either fall away, be tucked into the waistband, or – as styled at the show – pinned to the bodice as though the outfit was in the process of being constructed on a tailor’s form. Further underlining the visual language of a tailor’s or dressmaker’s workshop, the selvedge of the fabric is used as the edge of the wrap skirt, with the traditional fabric manufacturer’s gold selvedge lettering visible. It reads 'lane tasmania' giving the origin of the wool, ‘super 100’s’ denoting the type of cloth and ‘made in Biella’ denoting its place of manufacture.
