Resembling jade, they were admired for their tranquil beauty. They were often used in Buddhist tea ceremonies and meditation rituals.\r\n\r\nAlthough some were made in northern China, green-glazed wares remained a speciality of the south; this stemcup was produced at the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province. Green-glazed vessels were exported in large quantities to South-east Asia and the Middle East. Later European collectors gave these wares the fanciful name of ‘celadon’.","physicalDescription":"Stemcup, with rounded bowl flat on the bottom inside and with everted rim, heavily potted, and standing on a high stem spreading towards the foot, ribbed like bamboo, and partially hollow. Stoneware covered with a pea-green celadon glaze. Inside on the bottom is a faint incised design, probably a floral spray.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"},{"text":"celadon","id":"AAT15100"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"incised","id":"AAT53847"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with incised decoration and green glaze","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"}],"styles":[{"text":"Yuan","id":"AAT18436"},{"text":"Longquan","id":"x44562"},{"text":"Celadon","id":"x43845"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BR9677"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"31","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"STEMCUP","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Zhejiang","id":"x29912"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"14th century","earliest":"1300-01-01","latest":"1400-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Dame Ada MacNaghten","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"12.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stemcup, stoneware with incised decoration and green 'celadon' glaze, Longquan ware, China, Yuan dynasty, 14th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"label","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"floral sprays","id":"x36456"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Celadon dish, jar, stem cup and double-walled bottle\r\nSouthern China, Longquan kilns, (2–4) 1300–1400; (5) 1300–1500\r\nThe characters on the dish mean ‘great good fortune’.\r\nMuseum nos.
