Born in Dresden in 1919, he emigrated to Britain at the age of 14 to escape the rise of Nazi Germany, studying at the Reimann school in London for a career in commercial art and design. In 1940, due to his nationality, he was detained as an enemy alien and interned on the Isle of Man. Once free, he swiftly returned to London in 1942 and set up his own studio as a graphic designer. His first major commissions were for the General Post Office and later Ealing Film Studios. A notable commission came from Lyons Corner House to produce an 80ft long mural for their Marble Arch restaurant (closed 1974).\nThis is one a large number of Second World War and postwar posters in the V&A collection which chart the rise of health and safety messaging through the 20th century via organisations like the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.","physicalDescription":"Colour offset lithograph poster titled \"Wrong, Right\" depicting two wooden figures with moveable limbs, commonly used for artist sketching, to demonstrate safe lifting practices, bending with the knees and not with the back.
