The stork scissor design is now recognised as a timeless classic, however it originated in the late 18th century not as scissors but as ribbon threaders, a pair of which are in the V&A’s collection (M.1707-1944). It has been argued that ribbon threaders were also used by midwives to clamp umbilical cords immediately after birth, hence the association with storks.
