Regularly working in creative and productive collaboration with artisans from across Mexico and referring to the company’s substantial collection of Mexican clothing, Fernández designs contemporary ensembles which honour the rich textile and fashion traditions of Mexico’s Indigenous and Mestizo communities, celebrating techniques including bead embroidery and the joining together of square and rectangular panels. Also central to the designer’s ‘Manifiesto de la Moda en Resistencia’ (‘Manifesto of Fashion as Resistance’) ethos is the brand’s protest clothing, first made for the Women's March held in Washington, D.C., in 2017 and often commenting on the fashion industry. Fernández has won awards including Design Miami’s 2018 Design Visionary Award and her work has featured in publications including i-D and Vogue. In 2018, she contributed to the V&A’s Fashion in Motion programme. \r\n\nThis 'Moda en Resistencia Conjunto' ('Fashion as Resistance Ensemble'), compiled by the designer for the V&A using pieces from the Spring/Summer 2021 collection, brings together characteristic elements of Fernández’s approach. Rectangular pieces of linen are central to the construction of the tunic and poncho, which make statements, in Spanish, including ‘FASHION IS NOT EPHEMERAL’ and ‘BEING ORIGINAL IS RETURNING TO THE ORIGIN’. The tunic and poncho were made in collaboration with Isaías Salgado, whose work preserves the tradition of hand-painted lettering and visual communication in Mexico.","physicalDescription":"Ensemble made up of a tunic, pants, or trousers, and a poncho. All aqua green and lilac linen.\r\n\r\nThe tunic is made from largely rectangular pieces of aqua green linen, with the back piece extending below to form a banner. Rectangular pieces of lilac linen form the short sleeves, which are open underneath. A long, narrow band of lilac linen attached across the bottom of the banner and extending from each side forms two streamers. A colourful patterned textile lines the neckband. ‘LA / MODA / NO / ES / EFÍMERA’ has been painted on the front of the tunic in black. ‘LA / TRADICIÓN / NO / ES / ESTÁTICA’ has been painted on the banner in black, on the side which is on display when the banner is held up behind the tunic.\r\n\r\nThe pants, or trousers, are lilac on the proper right leg and aqua green on the proper left leg, with an aqua green elasticated waistband. They are full length and slightly tapered.\r\n\r\nThe poncho is rectangular, being slightly longer than it is wide. The front is lilac with the text ‘SER ORIGINAL / ES VOLVER / AL ORIGEN’ painted in black along one side, across the top and down the other side. There are two armholes edged on the front side with a patterned textile. The back of the poncho is also lilac, but it has a flap of aqua linen attached below the armholes, going all the way across. ‘MODA / EN / RESISTENCIA’ has been painted in black, with the first two words at the top and the last word across the aqua green band.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Carla Fernández’s Spring/Summer 2021 Moda en Resistencia (Fashion as Resistance) collection. The designs were presented in a runway show organised by Fashion Week Mexico in October 2021, held in Mexico City at the printing press of the Mexican newspaper El Universal, and have featured in brand photography. For the runway show, the tunic and pants were worn together. The poncho was teamed with a long dress featuring text. Both ensembles were displayed in 2022 as part of the Denver Art Museum exhibition Carla Fernández Casa de Moda: A Mexican Fashion Manifesto, for which there was an accompanying publication. Examples of the house’s protest pieces including the ‘SER ORIGINAL / ES VOLVER / AL ORIGEN’ (‘BEING ORIGINAL IS RETURNING TO THE ORIGIN’) poncho also featured in the Museo Franz Mayer exhibition Carla Fernández Casa de Moda: Un manifiesto de moda mexicana (Mexico City, 2023) and the le19M (la Galerie du 19M) show Carla Fernández: L’avenir fait main (Paris, 2023).
