Concerned for the brand’s new interns, who had worked hard to get the opportunity of work experience in the studio and now found themselves at home, Jeffrey designed these suits as a craft project that the label’s interns could work on remotely. Jeffrey wished to commemorate what he felt was important at this period: community, health, and hope. Looking to pagan traditions of costume, performance, ritual, and symbolism, he personified these key words into figures.\r\n\r\nThe ‘Health’ suit was made by Madeleine Handel. Writing in 2025, Handel remembered the experience and what it meant at the time: “While working on the embroidered suits for Loverboy’s SS21 collection, I have fond memories of spending the whole day hand embroidering each section of the suit. Even though we were locked down during the pandemic, I remember enjoying the fact that I could continue to be creative, even if that meant spreading all my work out on the living room floor of my student house! I have great memories of video call check ins with Charles Jeffrey and the team, updating them on our progress through our computer screens. It was surreal but so satisfying to feel like I was still involved in such a huge project, whilst in the midst of such a chaotic period of time. I feel so incredibly proud to have been involved in the Charles Jeffrey Loverboy SS21 collection. I have the Lookbook displayed on my bookshelf and have even bought magazines like Lampoon that displayed images of the embroidered suits inside. When I found out the V&A were acquiring the suits, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I look back at the collection, knowing how hard everyone worked through the lockdown to get together a collection that was so cohesive, despite the fact that we couldn’t always be in the same space creating it. Since completing my internship with Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, I have trained to become a design and technology teacher. I now teach textiles to secondary school students and lead a project focused on embroidery and appliqué. Whenever I teach this topic, I think back to the hours I spent creating the embroidered suit for SS21, and I feel privileged to share some of that industry experience with my classes. Watching Charles Jeffrey design the embroidered suits, and the imagery we would eventually appliqué onto them, was incredible. His creativity and the freedom with which he expresses his heritage through his work continue to inspire me, and that is the same sense of possibility I hope to nurture in my own students”.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Health' suit of cotton drill with applique panels, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY, Sping/Summer 2021, London","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.46:1-2026","T.46:2-2026","T.46:3-2026","T.46:4-2026","T.46:5-2026","T.46:6-2026","T.46:7-2026"],"accessionNumberNum":"46","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2026,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-13","recordCreationDate":"2025-11-26","availableToBook":false}}
