The enamel medallions are strikingly distinct by their bright colours and dark background for the Crucifixion and can be found on a small group of objects also made for the Lavra between the 1710s and 1730s. Their compositions combined European engravings with themes specific to Lavra and were probably in a Kyivan workshop. \r\n\r\nУ православній літургії потир використовується для освячення вина та хліба, які подаються вірянам ложкою. On display until September 2027. <b>\n</b>\r\nThis display presents seven Ukrainian masterpieces of sacred art that together reveal Kyiv’s Orthodox Christian heritage. The objects are from the National Preserve ‘Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, today both an active place of worship and a museum.\n\r\nSince its foundation as a monastery in 1051, the Lavra has been a centre of Ukrainian cultural, religious and intellectual life. Its large complex has been repeatedly destroyed, rebuilt and expanded over centuries of invasion by competing powers that spanned the borders of Central and Eastern Europe and Asia. Its sacred objects illuminate the ancient practices of Orthodox devotion, while their provenance traces their displacement and return in the 20th century.\n\r\nAfter a multi-year collaboration with the Lavra Preserve, the objects here have been lent to the V&amp;A for display in the UK for the very first time. The Lavra and its artworks’ survival stand as a testament to the beauty and resilience of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.\r\n\r\nMade possible with support from the British Council and the Gilbert Trust for the Arts. All objects are generously lent by the National Preserve ‘Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra'. \r\n\r\nСвященні скарби з Києва\n\r\nЦя виставка представляє сім українських шедеврів сакрального мистецтва, які висвітлюють православну християнську спадщину Києва. Предмети походять з Києво-Печерської лаври, яка є об'єктом всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО і одночасно діє як місце богослужіння та музей.\n\r\nЗ моменту свого заснування як монастиря в 1051 році Лавра була центром українського культурного, релігійного та інтелектуального життя. Усі предмети щедро надані Національним заповідником «Києво-Печерська лавра».\n\n<u>Monastery of the Caves</u>\r\nAround 1013, the Christian monk and saint, Anthony of Pechersk, settled in a cave in the hills of Kyiv, where he founded the monastery of the caves (<i>Pechersk</i>). It later became a <i>Lavra</i>, a title reserved for major Orthodox Christian monasteries. The site comprises over 100 historic and contemporary buildings, including two underground cave complexes: the Near and Far Caves. Its religious buildings include the Dormition Cathedral and 22 churches. Each is dedicated to an episode from early Christianity or from the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The objects in this display reflect the significance of the Lavra as a major hub for artistic production and patronage.\r\n\r\nПечерний монастир\r\nУ 1013 році християнський чернець преподобний Антоній Печерський оселився в печері на київських схилах, де заснував монастир. Цей монастир пізніше став Лаврою - назва, яка використовується для великих православних християнських монастирів. Embellished with a detachable sleeve, scrolling foliage is pierced onto the surface and four protuding enamel medallions depict the Crucifixion with an angel taking Christ's blood into the chalice, and full-length images of Christ Pantocrator, the Mother of God, and John the Baptist, each accompanied by a respective inscription.\n\r\nThe nodus features four applied winged heads and two bands of pellets and pierced leaves above and below. The circular lobed foot with a hexagonal stem, includes twelve bolted-on clusters of fruits and flowers and six protuding enamel medallions depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ: The Last Supper, Agony in the Garden, Pilate's Garden, Flagellation of Christ, The Entombment, Christ Crowned with Thorns.\n\r\nWith engraved inscription in Church Slavonic and number ‘4’ for the sacristy of the Near Caves, further scratched ‘No.4’ on the base and other inventory numbers (12900 in white paint and pencil, 24 in pencil, ‘2258/КПЛ’ in ink and crossed out, and 254 in ink and pencil, twice).\r\n\r\nПотир\r\nНевідомий майстер\r\n1733\r\nСрібло: литво, карбування, позолота, гравіювання; емаль, з написом церковно-слов'янською мовою\r\n\r\nЧаша потира циліндрична, з дещо розширеними вінцями. Their more recent histories reveal stories of destruction, looting and loss.\n\r\nBeginning in 1922, anti-religious campaigns in Soviet controlled Kyiv saw church property systematically confiscated from the Lavra, which was converted into a secular museum. Hundreds of artefacts disappeared during this period.\n\r\nUnderstanding objects’ provenance – how they have travelled through histories of ownership, displacement and appropriation – is a crucial area of research at the V&amp;A today.\n\n<u>Provenance</u>\r\n1733: Given to the Sacristy of the Near Caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra by Hieromonk Levii Zelenetskyi \r\n1803: recorded a part of a set with a diskos and an asterisk\r\n1925: Recorded by Soviet authorities in the collection of the National Preserve\r\n‘Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’  with the asterisk\r\n1941: Evacuated from Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during WWII\r\n1947: Returned to Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra post-war\n\r\n\nРозпорошена спадщина\r\nСкарби з колекції Києво-Печерської лаври мають детальні історичні записи, що надають безпрецедентне розуміння того, коли, ким і для яких церков Лаври вони були замовлені.
