Ashbee, like several of the leading figures was from a wealthy background, educated at Cambridge and started his career as an architect. Many of the most admired products of the Guild, metal work and jewellery in particular were designed by Ashbee. The Guild was based at Essex House in Mile End Road in London until 1902 when it moved to Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ashbee, Charles Robert","id":"A8102"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Guild of Handicraft Ltd.","id":"A9111"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"pearls","id":"AAT11827"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts (movement)","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2023NK5934","2023NK5935","2023NK5936","2023NN4938","2023NN4939"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES412512"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES412512"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES412512"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hand mirror (part of a toilet service)","id":""}],[{"text":"Hair brush (part of a toilet ervice)","id":""}],[{"text":"Comb (part of a toilet service)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Essex House, Mile End Road","id":"x43589"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"hallmarked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1900-1901","earliest":"1900-05-29","latest":"1901-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Joy Scrutton","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"London hallmarks for 1900-01","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Mark of the Guild of Handicraft Ltd.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Probably shown in the Arts and Crafts Exhibtion of 1906","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Toilet service, silver, London hallmarks for 1900-01, mark of the Guild of Handicraft, designed by C.R.
