It matched the sapphire and diamond brooch that Albert gave to Victoria the day before their wedding and most of the stones came from jewellery given to Victoria by King William IV and Queen Adelaide. The coronet was worn around her chignon on the back of her head in 1842 in the first official portrait of the young Queen painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Multiplied in copies and engravings, the portrait became one of the defining images of the Queen in Great Britain and overseas.\r\n\r\nPrince Albert’s design for the coronet, drawn in pencil on two small pieces of paper, was inspired by the Saxon Rautenkranz, or circlet of rue, which formed part of his coat of arms.","physicalDescription":"Two small pencil sketches of a coronet mounted on a sheet of blue paper, with a note attached stating they were drawn by Prince Albert.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Albert Prince Consort of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha","id":"N1977"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Kitching, Joseph","id":"AUTH345456"},"association":{"text":"Maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil drawing on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"CAT6","shelf":"C","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c. 1840","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1844-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"M.20-2017","id":"O1389071"},"association":"Design"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"18.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18.8","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Dimensions for the blue sheet of paper the drawings are affixed to."}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Drawn by Prince Albert'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"These drawings were stuck inside a copy of a book of Prince Albert's speeches.
