The issues they address range from technological anxieties to the climate crisis. They provide strategy and policy advice to corporate and governmental entities, while also creating artistic projects that focus on public engagement. Often taking the form of film and installation, these exhibitions have been hosted internationally across a wide range of museums and galleries. \r\n\r\nSUPERFLUX, Issue 1 is the design studio’s first physical publication which is a part of the research project ‘The Drone Aviary’. As a single-sheet magazine, the two sides of the print use speculative design to consider the future of drone technology. The front illustration titled ‘Cartographies of the Sky’ depicts an imagined central London with the potential infrastructure needed to support an expansion of drones. This ranges from geofences and flight paths to landing pads and charging stations. By imaging how the airspace will be impacted, it prompts readers to reflect on its future impact on life in the city. The reverse side has text from British writer Tim Maughan, which includes two short fictions about intrusive drone use. Alongside this are descriptions of different potential drone types, like the surveillance drone ‘Nightwatchman’ and the environmental monitoring drone ‘Clearsky CS-6S' next to illustrations of their potential look.  \r\n\r\nIn this way, the magazine contemplates how drone technology is being utilised for an increasing number of ways. Historically, it has been used for military and industrial purposes, but commercial drones have become widely accessible to the general public with models like DJI’s Phantom Drone released in 2013 (CD.10-2016). This technology has become increasingly smaller, lighter, faster and equipped with better cameras. The informational knowledge that is collected holds potential to be used for monitoring power, which has sparked conversation around privacy, security and its impact on communities. \r\n\r\nThis object was acquired after an installation of the project was featured in the V&A’s ‘All Of This Belongs To You’ exhibition in 2015 and a video presentation from Superflux was shown at V&A Shekou’s ‘Values of Design’ exhibition in 2017.  ","physicalDescription":"The front of the single-sheet magazine is an illustration of central London with drones on coloured flightpaths in the sky, called drone zones, as well as charging stations, landing pads, and boxy yellow geofences around buildings. The reverse has two pieces of short fiction, and shorter writings about various potential drone types like the surveillance drone 'The Nightwatchman' or the traffic operating drone 'The Routehawk'. Next to these texts are small illustrations of these drone types.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Superflux","id":"AUTH410115"},"association":{"text":"Designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Inkjet print","id":"x39339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Digital design","id":"THES273936"},{"text":"Urbanism","id":"THES270076"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2025PK4056","2025PK4069"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CAT","id":"THES49167"},"free":"","case":"1","shelf":"D","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"magazine","id":"AAT215389"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2015-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"NCOL.591-2025","id":"O1812020"},"association":"Non-collection object"}],"creditLine":"Given by Superflux","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"246","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"209","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Thickness","value":"10","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"closed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"SUPERFLUX, Issue 1, A single-sheet magazine by design studio Superflux","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.985-2025"],"accessionNumberNum":"985","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2025,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2025-10-02","availableToBook":false}}
