On 17 December 2024, the UK Government launched a consultation proposing major changes to copyright law including copyright exemption for the use of creative content for digital ‘text and data mining’. The proposals received considerable criticism, with opponents stating that opting out would be impractical in practice as it would require each individual writer or artist to notify thousands of AI service providers that they do not want their content, or to monitor what has happened to their work across the entire internet.\n\r\nThis album was released on the last day of the consultation period, 25 February 2025, and is one of the limited-edition vinyl records that were distributed at the 45th edition of the BRIT Awards, 1 March 2025. The track listing of the LP spells out: The/ British/ Government / Must / Not / Legalise / Music / Theft / To / Benefit / AI / Companies (12 tracks in total). Each track is made up of ambient empty studio sounds, with contributors to the empty studios mostly remaining anonymous. \n\r\nInstigated by Ed Newton-Rex, the campaign and album was created in collaboration with colleagues across the music industry. In the end, more than 1,000 musicians co-signed the album. Newton-Rex is a former AI executive, composer and current founder and CEO of the AI certification non-profit ‘Fairly Trained’.","physicalDescription":"White record cover with bold black lettering, a tracklisting and names involved in creating the album.
