Pouyat’s wares were celebrated for their remarkable whiteness, translucency and brilliance of glaze, which set them apart from other Limoges manufactories and made them highly sought after across Europe. Léon Arnoux, Art Director of the Minton factory in Stoke-on-Trent, wrote of the factory’s display at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, praising Pouyat porcelain for its exceptional qualities, specifically the brightness of the white porcelain they produced. \r\n\r\nThe teacup and saucer have a significant provenance, having once belonged to the German-French art collector Adolphe Schloss (1842-1910). Schloss and his wife Lucie Mathilde Haas amassed a renowned collection of art from the Netherlands during the late 19th century, which included works by Flemish masters such as Rubens, Rembrandt and Ruysdael. Despite the family's efforts to protect the collection, it was seized by the Nazis during the Nazi occupation of France in 1943. Over 300 objects were confiscated. After the war, around half of the artworks were returned to the family but the others remain missing. Works from the Schloss collection continue to be discovered and restituted.
