During the early 1950s Geobra Brandstätter had shifted its focus from producing metal toys to plastic ones, capitalising on the introduction of plastics which revolutionised toy making by offering the opportunity to make mass-produced, affordable, colourful toys.\n\nBetween 1971 and 1974 Hans Beck carried out research  while developing the figures, his aim being to create a toy that was simple, flexible, and frustration-free. He wanted children to be able to imagine freely, without being limited by overly complex or rigid designs. Beck recognised the limitations of traditional tin soldiers and other metal figures, which had been popular since the 1800s but couldn’t be repositioned or posed during imaginative play. The result of  Beck’s work was a small figure that fit comfortably in a child’s hand, with a face inspired by children’s drawings: a large head, a smile and no nose.\r\n\r\nThe ‘Large Victorian Dollhouse Mansion’ was sold as set 5300  and was first released in 1989. The expansion floor, set 7411, was released in 1993 and this, plus other  additional sets of accessories, followed as later gifts to the donor. A new version of this ‘Large Victorian Dollhouse  Mansion’ was released by the manufacturers in 2004, so this object represents an original example from the era of its initial
