Worn at home, they were popular choices for eighteenth-century portraits, signifying the refinement of the wearer and his intellectual or artistic talents and pursuits. Unlike the tailored suit consisting of coat, waistcoat, and breeches, these voluminous gowns also allowed men to show off the latest fashions in fabrics with large-scale patterns. This gown was very cleverly tailored to make it completely reversible, to show off an English printed cotton in blue and white and a French cotton printed in a style known as ‘ramoneur’ or ‘chimney sweep’ with a dark background.","physicalDescription":"Man's informal gown made of a glazed ‘ramoneur’ printed cotton with red and blue flowers on a black background on one side and a printed cotton of white floral trails on a dark blue background.\r\nThe garment is T-shaped, widening from shoulder to hem with long, narrow sleeves. It has a 2½-inch (6.25 cm) standing collar, and 3¼-inch (8.5 cm) cuffs, a pocket opening on each side with glazed, unbleached linen pocket bags. The collar, cuffs, pocket bindings and buttons are constructed to make the garment completely reversible.
