The range was developed by founder Terri Bryant in 2020, a makeup artist who lost much of her dexterity due to Parkinsons, in collaboration with product designers Essential Design. Guide Beauty’s aim was to create a cosmetic product with integrated design affordances that consider access first. The full range has been designed in consultation with, and marketed and distributed to, disabled consumers at a mass scale. \r\n\r\nThe Guide Wand is a multi-use applicator designed to support precise make up application for eyeliner, false lashes, lipstick, and other cosmetics. The Guide Wand design incorporates multiple modes of use including an enlarged rim with an indentation for a finger to rest on. It allows for the applicator to be held firmly and comfortably in multiple positions, and encourages a more balanced arm posture, while also resting on the face, reducing shaking and pressure. The rubber nib which is soft and flexible is also an important aspect of the wand’s design – it is gentle to use but firm enough to withstand higher impact use and reduce injury which may occur through shaking, pressing down, or spasms. \n\r\nIn its design, Guide Beauty aims to utilise universal design principles to provide ergonomic support with a high tolerance for error and wide inclusivity, demonstrated in the choice of handle, and in the materials chosen to reduce injury. Universal design is a set of principles for design first established by disabled architect Ronald Mace in 1997 which focus on increasing widest possible, equitable use, and have come to define design that can be used by as many people as possible.\r\n","physicalDescription":"A dark green plastic make-up applicator with interchangeable heads, one in light grey rubber, the other a black brush.
