The entire composition is surrounded by a solid black border to be gilded. The inscription above reads as “This”, indicating that the border represented in the whole saucer design, and not the line segment above, should be used. The design appears to take inspiration from Kakiemon designs in the way that the flowers, leaves, and branches are loosely floating in the composition. And while the four border sprigs mirror each other, the central portion of the design is asymmetrical, as can be seen in this genuine Kakiemon design, shown beside a Dutch imitation of Kakiemon. This side-by-side shows how Western manufacturers were imitating Japanese styles fairly closely, but with their own twist and amalgamation of different elements and motifs.\r\n\r\nThere are also possible Chinoiserie elements, such as in this late 18th century Imari plate. Although it has some similarities to Kakiemon, such as the asymmetry and loosely floating foliage, it is a bit more densely packed like the Rockingham design. It also contains two inanimate objects, a garden box and a wagon with two wheels. The garden box in this design clearly shows plants sprouting from it, which brings up the question of what the box in the Rockingham design is. As in many Chinoiserie or other Asian-inspired wares, the English and European versions often did not capture the deeper meanings of Asian motifs, and the forms were inaccurately portrayed, or portrayed out of context. It is possible in this case that the box is an undetermined motif that was used to increase the exotic look of the design. Possible identifications of the box are that it is an incense burner, which would explain the lines and marks which would be meant to indicate openings or slots. It could also be a garden box, but if it is, why are no flowers shown sprouting from it directly? As there is no figure in the composition, it is likely not meant to be a kind of seat.\r\n\r\nAs there are no figures in the Rockingham design, it is difficult to obtain context for what the box may be, which points to it being either a garden box or incense burner, which could logically exist without figures in the composition. But if Western makers were not aware about what common motifs were supposed to be, then they may have seen a similar example elsewhere and copied it without knowing the object’s function.\r\n\r\nStella Koslowski","briefDescription":"A page of china patterns within a pattern book containing designs for Brameld painted earthenware c.1810-30 and Rockingham Porcelain Tea and Dessert Ware c. 1825-30, watercolour, pen and ink on paper, Great Britain.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Koslowski, Stella.
