The top one is dominated by a primrose flower arrangement with leaves and twigs. The border is star-like line pattern. It is reminiscent of many Dutch delft designs, which have simple central designs and a delicate, sometimes geometric border. \r\n\r\nThe bottom design is similar to that found on page four but is a more conventional rendition of a Chinoiserie design. Though still executed in a naïve style, it differs from the design on page four by featuring a pagoda-style house rather than a European-style one. It also includes a triangular line pattern as a border, which differs from the simple line border represented on the page four design. The chosen foliage is also more typical of Chinese-inspired English delft, with the willow tree and more ornate fencing. This matches the fragments found at the excavation of Swinton more closely, as well as the designs made during the partnership with Leeds. The way the willow tree is portrayed is also very close to how Spode stylized it in their transfer printed designs, which were thought to be copied from the Chinese Mandarin design. The willow tree became a popular motif for Chinoiserie in part because it was seen in many authentic Chinese wares. The symbolism surrounding the willow tree in Buddhism is that it represents meekness, spring, and grace which connects it to femininity. Whether or not this was fully understood by Western pottery manufacturers is not certain, as they often were not as aware of the significance of these motifs when using them on their own wares.\r\n\r\nBoth of these blue designs likely stemmed from the partnership with Leeds, as did the design found on page four of the pattern book. As there have not been many extant examples except for the shards found during the excavation of Swinton, it is likely that these designs were not executed much after the departure of Leeds and the handover of power to the Bramelds. The pattern may have been transferred over from early design books for the purposes of record keeping, or perhaps in order to reference it to make replacements for clients that had already purchased a set or service in the past.\r\n\r\nStella Koslowski","briefDescription":"A page of biscuit painting patterns with a floral central design and rural landscape, bound within a pattern book containing designs for Brameld painted earthenware c.1810-30 and Rockingham Porcelain Tea and Dessert Ware c. 1825-30, watercolour, pen and ink on paper, Great Britain.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Koslowski, Stella.
