In 1994 she founded the Kingdom Choir, a London-based Gospel community choir. In 2018, the choir were invited to perform at the wedding ceremony of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Gibson invited numerous other singers from across the country to join the Kingdom Choir in a performance of the hymn ‘This Little Light of Mine’ and Ben E. King’s 1962 single ‘Stand By Me’. \n\r\n‘This Little Light of Mine’ is a popular African American spiritual song, and Ben E. King adapted ‘Stand by Me’ from a Gospel hymn of the same name first published in 1905. The selection of the latter reiterated Gospel’s stylistic and performance links to soul music and the Christian faith. The performance and chosen renditions also reflect a long tradition of Black Gospel performances for British royalty. As far back as 1873, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, an African American choir hailing from Fisk University, Tennessee, performed for Queen Victoria as part of their UK tour. In 1925, a new iteration of the group performed for King George V at Windsor Castle. 93 years later, in the chapel at that very same venue, the Kingdom Choir became the first all-Black Gospel choir to perform at a British royal wedding. The ceremony was viewed live by an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion people. \n\r\nThis dress was worn by Gibson for the performance. Designed by the group’s stylist Jeanette Young and made by dressmaker Tanya Dimitrova, the dress reflects the aesthetic chosen for the Kingdom Choir’s performance. Members of the choir wore a mixture of light pink, nude and light blue formalwear, receiving widespread praise and appreciation from the wedding’s global audiences.
