Ukala termed his area of special interest ‘Folkism’, a study of native African forms of theatre, in contrast to the drama tradition introduced to West Africa by British colonial powers. Ukala was introduced to Frith while exploring English Folk Theatre and looking for practitioners preserving and presenting folk tradition performance. The two conceived a piece inspired by protests by Ijo people about the devastation of the Nigerian Delta region by global oil companies, in particular Shell. Ukala had a personal connection to the event through the writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, who had been executed in 1995 along with eight others, for their involvement in this protest.\r\n\r\nThe performance drew on both English and Nigerian folk storytelling, representing the pre-colonial era performance traditions of both countries.\r\n\r\nThe character of Boma was performed by 'Funmi Adewole.","physicalDescription":"Full head mask with cut outs for eyes.
