He launched his Paris-based ready-to-wear label in 1985 and in 1988 became the first American designer to be admitted to the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter, the governing body of the French ready-to-wear industry. Kelly was known for flamboyant and feminine designs which often featured distinctive motifs such as hearts, bows and lips, as well as garments that were decorated with an abundance of colourful buttons. His work had broad appeal, featured in leading fashion publications and was worn by many notable celebrities and fashion personalities, from Bette Davis to Cher to Grace Jones. Based in the USA, producer, playwright, journalist and screenwriter Keli Goff is a fashion collector focused on preserving historically significant fashion clothing and memorabilia - particularly the work and legacy of Black fashion designers. In addition to pieces by Halston and Bill Blass, her collection comprises more than 200 pieces by Black, mainly US American, designers and makers including: Ann Lowe, Isaia Rankin, Willi Smith, Patrick Kelly, Stephen Burrows, Virgil Abloh and Christopher John Rogers.
