As seen in the symmetrical floral pattern on this vase, his work was eccentric and eye-catching, combining forms and colours and typifying Dutch Art Nouveau.\r\n\r\nColenbrander joined the firm of Rozneburg in 1884 and left in 1889. This vase dates to his time at the factory. Designs in the Colenbrander style were continued for many years after his departure.\r\n\r\nVases such as this were often displayed in garnitures.","physicalDescription":"Earthenware vase and cover painted with a symmetrical stylised floral pattern in shades of blue, yellow, red and green on a cream ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Colenbrander, Theodoor","id":"A24107"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Rozenburg","id":"A11303"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, painted","categories":[{"text":"Art Pottery","id":"THES49021"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Nouveau","id":"x29285"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CC7086","2009CE1175"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"1","box":""},{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}],[{"text":"Cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"The Hague","id":"x29217"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1889","earliest":"1889-01-01","latest":"1889-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"45.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"17.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"base, widest point","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'K', 'Den H<u>aa</u>g', '43.,' 'E'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Painted on base.\r\n'K' - possibly painter's mark, \r\n'E' - date mark for 1889"}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Sotheby's Amsterdam, February 2008, previously owned by Justin Schiller and Dennis David","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Earthenware vase and cover painted with stylised floral motif, designed by Colenbrander for Rozenburg, 1889","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<i> Dutch Modernism: The Schiller-David Collection of Symbolism, Art Nouveau & Art Deco 1880-1930</i>, Sotheby's Amsterdam, Tuesday 5th February 2008"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.3:2-2008","C.3:1-2008"],"accessionNumberNum":"3","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2008,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Cover","Vase"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-06","recordCreationDate":"2008-12-22","availableToBook":false}}
