His dialectograms are complex drawings of buildings, places and communities that combine elements of architecture, cartography, graphic art, documentary and socially engaged design. He coined the word ‘dialectogram’ to describe ‘the perspective of the drawings; made from the ground up, with the people who make the place what it is, in their own words and way of speaking’; word 'dialectogram' derives from 'dialect' and 'diagram'. \r\n\r\nCumbernauld is located in North Lanarkshire, north-east of Glasgow and was designated a new town in 1955 under the New Towns Act of 1946. In June 2023 it was purchased by North Lanarkshire Council with Government Levelling Up funding and is due to be demolished between 2031-33 to be replaced with a new ‘town hub’ as part of a multi-million-pound regeneration project. \n\nFor this work, Miller began by drawing a floor plan then filled this ‘shell’ with the furniture, objects, people and stories that occupy it. Through this graphic art form, he illustrates the social architecture of a place, bringing its history and human stories to life.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"A large panel drawing on paper incorporating architectural details, social narratives and illustrations","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Miller, Mitch (Dr)","id":"AUTH393480"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Drawn by Mitch Miller in collaboration with the residents of Cumbernauld"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ink and felt tip pen on mountboard","categories":[{"text":"Architectural drawings","id":"THES274432"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Urbanism","id":"THES270076"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2025PJ5604","2025PJ5600","2025PJ5603","2025PJ5601","2025PJ5605","2025PJ5602","2025PJ5594","2025PJ5596","2025PJ5597","2025PJ5599","2025PJ5598"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"KK","shelf":"30","box":""},{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"KK","shelf":"30","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Drawing","id":"x32498"}],[{"text":"Drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Cumbernauld","id":"x35157"},"association":{"text":"Drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2024","earliest":"2024-01-01","latest":"2024-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Drawn by Mitch Miller in collaboration with the residents of Cumbernauld.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"841","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Combined size of two parts"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"1998","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Combined size of two parts"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dialectogram of the Cumbernauld Town Centre by Mitch Miller, 2024.
