After moving to England from St Kitts at the age of 7, she began learning to play the piano and guitar. She soon progressed to writing her own songs and performing in local concerts. Armatrading released her debut album, Whatever’s for Us, in 1972. Her third self-titled album of 1976 included the highly popular single ‘Love and Affection’. \n\r\nArmatrading’s music ranges across genres including folk, blues, soul and rock, and she has become one of Britain’s most prolific recording artists. She has released 21 studio albums and four live albums, winning an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996 and three Grammy nominations. She was awarded an MBE (2001) and CBE (2020) for her contribution to music and social activism. \n\r\nThis BOSS CE-1 Chorus Ensemble pedal was purchased by Armatrading in 1976 and subsequently used on various records, including her hit albums Joan Armatrading (1976), Show Some Emotion (1977) and Walk Under Ladders (1981). Armatrading also used the pedal to perform live on tour from 1976 until the early 1990s. \n\r\nReleased in 1976, the BOSS CE-1 was the first commercially available chorus pedal. Chorus pedals allowed solo musicians to change the instrument’s sound to replicate that of multiple guitars playing together. The CE-1 offered a wider range of depth, intensity, vibrato rate and volume level controls for guitarists, and was far more portable than its predecessors. It quickly became a popular choice for rock and pop artists. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A dark grey BOSS Chorus Ensemble guitar pedal.
