In creating the narrative of the piece, Jane Hyslop uses both sides of the concertina and is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando (1928). It is specifically focused on the poem written by the eponymous central character throughout Woolf’s novel, with Hyslop’s book taking the form of an imagined visual edition of the poem. One side focuses on the natural environment, with drawings and pochoir prints of the flora mentioned in Orlando alongside other plants related to certain parts of the novel, as well as plants that represent real historical events. The reverse side of the piece goes beyond the 324 years covered by Orlando. It starts by highlighting real events that took place between 1928 and 2020, then goes on to explore the first Covid-19 lockdowns in the UK, from March 2020 to April 2021. Hyslop does this by examining indigenous plants in her own surroundings, representing the experience of being restricted to her immediate environment during this difficult period. The oak tree ends by imagining what the future may hold for us in the face of a climate emergency, illustrating already declining biodiversity as well as concerns about the broader human impact on nature. \n\r\nJane Hyslop is a Scottish artist working in book and paper form, exploring themes of place and identity to create work that combines human and organic histories. She collaborated on this project with Bryony Randall, Professor of Modernist Literature at Glasgow University, who wrote the accompanying introduction and notes.  \r\n","physicalDescription":"A double sided concertina book with illustrations on both sides.
