The dress has a 'V' shaped neckline, long sleeves, and pointed bodice, joined to a cartridge-pleated, dome-shaped skirt, which has a separate, internal waistband of black silk. The bodice is cut to use the selvedge at the centre-back closing edges, which fasten with eleven black metal hooks and eyes.  The sleeves are full length, fitted closely to the upper arms, and joined to a gathered section at the elbows, with a piped seam. There is self-fabric piping at the waistline, neckline, and on the sleeve details. The sleeves open at the wrists with three hooks and eyes and have an insert of black machine-made lace, which may be a later addition. The bodice may have been trimmed with lace or other embellishment which is now lost.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"},{"text":"jacquard weaving","id":"x40508"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404277"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"dress","id":"x47499"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of the Elspeth Evans bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"12.25","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2025","earliest":"2025-09-19","latest":"2025-09-19"},"part":"bodice, shoulder to waist","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"33.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2025","earliest":"2025-09-19","latest":"2025-09-19"},"part":"bust","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"23.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2025","earliest":"2025-09-19","latest":"2025-09-19"},"part":"waist","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"35.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2025","earliest":"2025-09-19","latest":"2025-09-19"},"part":"waist to hem","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A day or dinner-dress of Jacquard-woven silk with floral motifs on a dark ground, imitating 1760s designs, probably Spitalfields silk; London, 1842-4.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.107-2025"],"accessionNumberNum":"107","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2025,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-07-01","recordCreationDate":"2025-04-15","availableToBook":false}}
