The handle is formed of a crescent moon and the body of the jug is decorated with stars evoking a nighttime sky. \r\n\r\nThis jug was designed by Blanche Georgiana Vulliamy, a British-Belgian artist and ceramic designer around 1899-1900. The moulded decoration is enhanced by the choice of glazes and the base is stamped with Vulliamy’s name, as well as a number indicating the design. It is an excellent example of her eccentric ‘grotesque’ pottery. Born in Ipswich in 1869, Vulliamy trained as a portrait artist in London in the 1890s. After her time in London, she moved to Torquay to live with her grandparents where she became interested in ceramics and the potteries around Barnstaple. Vulliamy began designing eccentric ceramics that ranged from tobacco jars to jugs and vases, among others. By 1899 she became well-known for her grotesque ceramics and in 1904 she began living and selling her ceramics from Pitt Street in Kensington, London. Vulliamy’s ceramics were sought after and were sold in major retailers including Liberty & Co.
