The form, known as an écuelle, was usually accompanied by an underplate or stand and probably imitates a metalware prototype. It was intended to serve broth, often beef based, as a light repast, either at the start of the day or instead of a heavy dinner. A broth-filled écuelle was brought from the kitchen to one's private dressing room or bedroom. The lid kept the contents hot, and the underplate would be easier to hold when carrying it.","physicalDescription":"Bowl and lid, of porcelain, painted in underglaze blue on the outside of the bowl, with a repeated design of two ladies on a terrace.
