While the factory is widely renowned for its tapestries, King Louis XIV also invited two families of Florentine stone workers to settle in Paris and work for him, following the model of the Grand Ducal workshops in Florence. Gobelins stone production was mainly intended for the King and his entourage and only a handful of stone mosaics have survived. Gobelins mosaics were only made between 1668 and 1699.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"A rectangualr stone mosaic (<i>comessi di pietre dure</i>) panel. The panel show an alert fox, looking leftwards, rendered primarily in jaspers. The fox stands in a verdant landscape with a prominent tree framing the composition on the right, using serpentine for the leaves and banded agate for the trunk. The pale cream-coloured sky is punctuated by billowing clouds, depicted using overlapping sections of chalecdony of various lustres. ","historicalContext":"The panel is the only surviving part of a tabletop bearing the arms of Louis XIV, that is recorded in a design drawing (Paris, BNF, inv. FRBNF40278913). It was made around 1680 by Ferdinand Megliorini (1634–1683), then director of the royal hardstone workshops at the Gobelins. The tabletop later disappeared. Furniture adorned with Gobelins stone mosaics were highly sought-after during the reign of Louis XV, and the administration decided to sell a large portion of them between 1748 and 1751. These pieces were dismantled, and the plaques were repurposed around 1780. \r\n\r\nOther stylistically similar mosaic panels, likely also by Megliorini, form part of two cabinets at Alnwick Castle. Two similar tabletops are at the Louvre (Musée du Louvre, inv. OA 5508) and Château de Compiègne.
