The aim was to establish the material as an important British export that would compete directly with other established international cotton markets. The Cotton Board was a central point of information about the material, responsible for promoting policy and boosting consumption of cotton through ‘internal propaganda and other means’, as stated in the Cotton Industry Act (1940). One of the ways the Cotton Board used to promote the material was the creation of public facing companies called the Colour, Design and Style Centre (CD&SC) and the Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers. These bodies were responsible for promoting cotton by inviting designers such as Norman Hartnell, Molyneux, Hardy Amies, Worth and Paquin to create designs that would make use of the fibre. The CD&SC would then put on exhibitions and fashion shows to display the designs and promote the use of cotton fabrics for all aspects of a person’s life, and not just domestically.\r\n\r\nThe Cotton Board also advertised the fibre to the public by sharing information on the material’s quality, care and versatility at a time when synthetic alternatives were emerging. Boxes with samples of the cotton boll, carded cotton fibres, different girths of spun cotton, and different types of weaves were used to educate the public on how cotton was processed and woven. Leaflets with data on the import and export of cotton, employment statistics and information regarding care of the cotton goods were also available inside of the box.
