The highly-stylised surface decoration is complemented by a handle decorated with leaves. This jug is an unusual example within Alcock’s production and is made in a rare brown and white parian colourway. This example of Alock's production, reflects the Victorian era’s fascination with exoticism and the wider influence of Orientalist themes in mass-produced goods and decorative arts. \n\nSamuel Alcock's press-moulded jugs, produced at his pottery in Burslem, Staffordshire, are among the most distinctive examples of Victorian relief- moulded ware. Made from a translucent parian body that sometimes approaches a dense stoneware in weight, Alcock's jugs are known for their distinctive colouring with lavender being one of the most popular colourways he produced. Alcock drew inspiration from a wide range of sources including classical sculpture, literature, popular engravings and popular culture. \r\n ","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"alcock","id":"A9213"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"parian","id":"AAT219039"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Parian jug with press-moulded decoration.","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Parian ware","id":"THES48916"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES388601"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jug","id":"AAT45685"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Burslem","id":"x30231"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1850","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Anthony Duerr","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Parian Jug by Samuel Alock with image of a man riding a camel.
