Depicted in the nude, an acanthus leaf wreath crowns her head. A grape vine encircles the the rim of the jug with a highly stylised handle mimicking a branch. The jug is covered with a pewter lid. The image likely originates from the original life-size marble, 'Ariadne', by German Sculpture Johann Heinrick Dannecker (1758-1841). Dannecker's 'Ariadne' became a main attraction at Bethmann's Museum in Frankfurt. It was depicted in travel literature, including Anna Jameson's 'Sketches of Germany' published in 1832. \r\n\r\nSamuel Alcock's press-moulded jugs, produced at his pottery in Burslem, Staffordshire, are among the most distinctive examples of Victorian relief-moulded ware. Made from a translucent parian body that sometimes approaches a dense stoneware in weight, Alcock's jugs are known for their distinctive colouring with lavender being one of the most popular colourways he produced. Alcock drew inspiration from a wide range of sources including classical sculpture, literature, popular engravings and popular culture.
