Cole kept a daily diary, which is brief and business-like, but also these more expansive notes written during his travels through Europe between 1830 and 1880. Aside from describing and remarking on the sites and institutions he visited along the way, Cole used these journals as a space to think about the subjects that dominated his career: art and design education, architecture and the management of museums and collections. \nThis journal documents a journey to Vienna, passing through France and then the German states, between October and November 1863. Cole is accompanied by the artists Richard and Samuel Redgrave, both of whom had worked with Cole in various roles. This journey served several purposes: to examine and learn from museum architecture and design, display and collections-management in key institutions in Paris, Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Vienna, but also to acquire both historical and contemporary objects from artists, dealers and manufacturers for the South Kensington Museums’ growing collections. In line with Cole’s ambition to expand the museum’s collection of reproductions, a particular focal point for this journey was the acquisition of plaster casts, electrotypes and photographs of objects to act as examples for good design in contemporary manufacturing. His notes are accompanied by sketches of museum interiors and objects, as well as a number of trade cards of German art dealers and manufacturers.
