Each portrait is stamped with the studio name and address and frequently includes the text 'This proof is a finished portrait and if kept will be charged to your account'.  The majority of the prints also include the studio negative number.  The sitter books that correspond to these negative numbers are located in the archives of the National Portrait Gallery.
