M. P. Stewart (later Laird of Coll) and inherited by his great granddaughter, Gay Wilson, who gave them to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2025. It is likely that they were made for sale in Yangon or Mandalay soon after the Third Anglo-Burmese War of 1885. They depict scenes of court life, such as hunts and cockfights, and are framed with thick gold, looped thread. \r\n\r\nThe artist of these paintings is unknown. They reflect the materials and style of the Burmese royal court at Mandalay in the reign of King Thibaw Min (r. 1878—1885). After the Third Anglo-Burmese War and the forced exile of King Thibaw, court artists entered the wider market, oftening working for British and European patrons and for the export trade in arts and crafts. Art dealers like Felice Beato, a former war photographer, contributed to this trade by producing mail-order catalogues with photographs, which were distributed internationally from his shop in Mandalay. A catalogue sent by Felice Beato to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1890s refers painted ‘doilies’ selling at 10 rupees a dozen (around £30 in 2025). It is possible that the doilies sold by Beato were similar to the paintings bought by Brigadier-General E. M. P. Stewart.\r\n\r\nFor the Felice Beato catalogue, see National Art Library catalogue number U319","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Square piece of painted silk showing a musician and audience with thick, gold, looped threaded border, Myanmar, late 19th century ","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["IS.13-2025"],"accessionNumberNum":"13","accessionNumberPrefix":"IS","accessionYear":2025,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-07-24","recordCreationDate":"2025-02-06","availableToBook":true}}
