He established his own practice, Owen Luder Partnership in 1957 and served as chairman of the Architects Registration Board and twice as President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1981-1983 and 1995-1997.\n\nIn the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Elephant and Castle was known as the ‘Piccadilly of South London’ due to its department store, theatre, cinemas and pubs. Originally called St. George’s Fields, it is believed that the area was later renamed ‘Elephant and Castle’ after a coaching inn located there. It was heavily bombed during WW2 and the London County Council (LCC) bought up land in the area, initially to provide parking during the Festival of Britain. In 1956 the LCC published plans for the redevelopment of a three-acre site with a shopping centre and developers were invited to submit proposals in competition. E. Alec Colman Development Company asked Luder to design an entry. Thirty-six developers submitted schemes and Boissevain and Osmond for the Willet Group of Companies won the competition. This architectural rendering of Luder's competition entry was created in 1959 by Gordon Cullen (1914-1994). Cullen was a leading figure in the post-war urban design movement and one of Britain’s most influential 20th century architectural draughtsmen.
