While originally focusing on menswear, JW Anderson released its first womenswear collection in 2010. \n\r\nKnown for developing innovative designs, embracing craft techniques and skewing gender norms, the London-based house soon earned critical acclaim and numerous awards. In 2015, they became the first brand to win both the Menswear and Womenswear Designer of the Year accolades at the British Fashion Awards. \n\nFor his JW Anderson Men’s Autumn Winter 2024 and Women’s Pre-Fall 2024 collections, presented together at Milan Men’s Fashion week, Anderson collaborated with the artist Christiane Kubrick, digitally printing a selection of her paintings, and a work by her daughter, Katharina Kubrick, onto garments. He had been inspired by Christiane Kubrick’s art in the film Eyes Wide Shut (1999), directed by her husband Stanley Kubrick. \r\n\nThe Men’s Autumn Winter 2024 collection included two jumper dress triptychs featuring works by Christiane Kubrick, whose art Anderson describes as ‘deeply personal’ and ‘quintessential’ yet ‘strange’ in the short film created to complement the collection, Who is the Painter? (2024). This triptych, looks 42, 43 and 44 from the show, reproduces Kubrick’s 1997 painting of a woman and a baby entitled New Baby Clothes. During the runway show, the dresses were presented one by one, destabilising the domestic scene and reflecting Anderson’s interest, expressed in the show notes, in ‘the background com[ing] to the fore’. The garments were displayed next to one another, but spaced out, in the Christiane Kubrick x JW Anderson installation hosted at Dover Street Market London later that year.\n","physicalDescription":"Full-length, long-sleeved, V-neck jumper dress, with ribbing at the neck, cuffs and hem. The back is black while the front and all of the sleeves have been printed with a complex, multi-coloured design. The garment forms part of a triptych of jumper dresses, which together reproduce a section of Christiane Kubrick’s 1997 painting New Baby Clothes. The complete triptych depicts a seated woman (on the proper left) whose face is angled down towards a baby who is lent against her back leg. New baby clothes next to these figures (on the proper right) form part of the scene. \r\n\r\nThis is the third part of the triptych. The design features a woman wearing a light pinkish top and dark blue trousers.
