While originally focusing on menswear, JW Anderson released its first womenswear collection in 2010. \n\r\nKnown for developing innovative designs, embracing craft techniques and skewing gender norms, the London-based house soon earned critical acclaim and numerous awards. In 2015, they became the first brand to win both the Menswear and Womenswear Designer of the Year accolades at the British Fashion Awards. \n\nThe designer’s playful approach was demonstrated by the opening ensemble of his JW Anderson Women’s Autumn Winter 2024 collection, presented during London Fashion Week. The supersized knitting stitch effect created a surprising and contemporary take on a knitted sweater and skirt set. In the brand’s Instagram show notes accompanying the collection, Anderson described ‘grotesque everydayness, in grotesque distortions and proportions’ in a collection that contrasted ‘the subtle and the loud’ as well as nostalgia and modernity. The outfit featured in the marketing campaign for the collection, shot by photographer Joe Cruz, cementing it as a key piece from that season.
