In this photo-collage, Sulter revives the forgotten experience of Black European’s and genocide during WWII. Sulter appropriates August Sander’s 1920s Zirkusarbeiten (circus workers) photographs, taken during the rise of fascism in Europe, and composites it with a black head from a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting and the naked half-figure of Gabrielle d’Estrées, whose portrait is held in the collection of the Louvre in Paris. The portrait highlights the traditions of Western art knowledge whilst Basquiat’s head (based on an African mask) announces the significance of African art. Sulter gives prominence to the Black performer, selecting to not layer over his image, and marks what is important with two dramatic red arrows.
