They were painted with cobalt blue on a white ground before being glazed; blue is a fugitive colour and runs in the firing process, smearing the design. A turquoise border was often added, placed just outside the black line border. \r\n\r\nSimilar tiles survive in situ covering the walls in the mosque and tomb of the Mamluk dignitary Ghars al-Din Khalil al-Tawrizi (d. 1430) in Damascus, begun in 1423. Elsewhere they are found in the mosque of Murad II in Edirne, north-western Turkey, built in 1435-6. They are sometimes interspersed with plain turquoise tiles. The blue and white Syrian tiles are not slavish imitations of Chinese designs, but rather a unique hybrid of Islamic motifs incorporating swaying leaves or arabesques.","physicalDescription":"Tile, fritware, hexagonal, painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a central solid flowerheard surrounded by floral palmettes within two black line bands and enclosed by a turquoise border.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fritware","id":"x29419"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"underglazed","id":"AAT48642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, underglaze painted in cobalt blue and turquoise, glazed","categories":[{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Mamluk","id":"x34993"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006BK9341"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344807"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tile","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Damascus","id":"x32596"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Syria","id":"x29200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1420-1450","earliest":"1415-01-01","latest":"1450-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"17.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"not measured","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tile, fritware, hexagonal, painted in underglaze blue, black and turquoise; Syria (Damascus), ca. 1420-1450.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Lane, Arthur. <u>A Guide to the Collection of Tiles</u>.
