These pieces evoke natural landscapes with their folds, bumps, and subtle variations in the black colour, suggesting contemplative imagination of the moon, which inspired the series' name. \n\nTraditionally, bodiless lacquerware is produced by starting with a rigid core which is covered in linen soaked in lacquer. Once the linen has hardened, the core is removed, and multiple layers of lacquer are applied to build the final piece. In comparison, this pieceis made using paste-like composite created by mixing natural lacquer with sepiolite fibre (a fibrous form of hydrous magnesium silicate) and diatomite. It allows lacquer to be shaped without a rigid core and its shape can be changed during the drying process, revolutionizing the traditional method. The mineral and fibre ingredients in the composite create a richly textured surface, moving away from the conventional glossy finish of lacquer and challenging perceptions of lacquer aesthetics.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"44","id":"THES49802"},"free":"","case":"CA52","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":"AAT132254"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Susanna Pang and Dr Tsun-Woon Lee","dimensions":[{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"60","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"‘Lunar Eclipse of the Valley’, vase, lacquer, fibre mesh, diatomite, stocking; made by Gao Shang (b.1992, China), made in Seoul, Korea, 2023.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.64-2025"],"accessionNumberNum":"64","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2025,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-13","recordCreationDate":"2024-12-24","availableToBook":false}}
