Queen’s ware, cream coloured earthenware, or creamware, was renamed Queen's ware by Josiah Wedgwood I after he had received the patronage of Queen Charlotte in 1765. Wedgwood creamware, and coloured bodies are still known as Queen's ware, and the name has come to be used, erroneously, as a generic term for creamware of other factories. Majolica is an earthenware body decorated with vibrantly coloured lead glazes. The use of lead added vibrancy and thickened the glaze, producing the translucent glassy layer. Considered by some to be the most important ceramic innovation of the 19th century, majolica was launched by Minton & Co. at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Over the following decades it became an international phenomenon, produced by factories across Britain, Europe and the United States. With the introduction of designs such as those by French artist and Wedgwood decorator, Emile Lessore (1805-1876), Wedgwood too responded to majolica ‘mania’. Wedgwood was relatively late to introduce majolica, but the success of these ranges contributed to Wedgwood’s resurgence in popularity in the 1860s.  Many majolica glazes reflect forms from the natural world, influenced by the Victorian passion for zoology and botany in the 19th century.","physicalDescription":"Plaque, Queen's ware with moulding and majolica glaze.
