They were made in a great variety of decoration and several ceramic bodies throughout the 19th century, including Queen's ware and Pearl ware. Services of this ware were often made in patterns matching the decoration of contemporary Wedgwood 'closet ware'. This wash bowl is made from Pearl ware. Pearl ware is essentially an earthenware body, which has had extra flint added to the initial clay-mix and cobalt to the glaze, to enhance the overall blue-white appearance of the ware. Initially perfected by Josiah Wedgwood I circa 1779, this ceramic ware was developed to meet the competition of blue-decorated imported Chinese Porcelain, however production of this particular ceramic body continued until 1940.","physicalDescription":"Wash bowl, Pearlware with marbled decoration; glazed, circular bowl with flared rim, white interior and exterior, decorated with blue slip marbled pattern.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"marbling","id":"AAT53812"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pearlware with marbling","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024PA4068"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA35","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bowls","id":"AAT203596"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1861","earliest":"1861-01-01","latest":"1861-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
