members of the public during a workshop hosted by photographer Yuki Tawada and ceramicist Fuku Fukumoto. Prior to the workshop, participants were asked to bring a photograph that they wished to burn, the ashes of which would be turned into a ceramic glaze and applied to tiny clay vessels produced by the participants. Called ‘tear bottles’, it is believed that the ancient Romans produced similar receptacles, using them to collect bereaved tears which they then buried in the graves of the deceased. Through the collective process of shapeshifting a photograph’s physical manifestation, Tawada and Fukumoto are interested in how different types of photographic latency reveal themselves, melding intimate individual and collective encounters, physical and embodied experiences, the past and present, and 2D and 3D photographic forms.
