The designers all graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) in the early 1980s, gaining notoriety in 1986 when they presented their distinctive fashions together at a London tradeshow. The then unknown designers casued a stir with their radical designs and impressively refined vision, attracting industry attention that would launch their professional careers. Van Noten founded his eponymous ready-to-wear label that same year, building a critically and commercially successful luxury fashion brand that remained financially independent until 2018. Operating at the fringe of the luxury fashion industry, Van Noten's success is predicated upon the strength of his unique aesthetic, which has gained a dedicated ‘insider’ following. Unlike his Antwerp Six contemporaries, who produced moody and experimental designs, Van Noten’s work is celebrated for his use of colour, luscious textiles and wearable shapes that make a bold, but not overblown, fashion statement. Van Noten's research into historically and geographically diverse textile techniques typically underpin his designs, which are known for their rich juxtaposition of embroideries, clashing prints and unexpected colourways. In March 2024, Van Noten announced that after 38 years he would be retiring from the label he founded. \n\nThis ensemble was the closing look from Van Noten's Spring-Summer 2024 womenswear collection – a collection that drew heavily from traditional menswear and featured Van Noten’s take on tailoring for women, a category often overlooked in favour of his more print heavy and textural designs. The ensemble’s overcoat and tuxedo trousers are feminised by their unexpected pairing with a white bra-top and embellished trouser stripes, whilst their generous cut exudes the nonchalance associated with Van Noten’s designs.","physicalDescription":"Ensemble comprising of wool overcoat, wool trousers, cotton bra top, leather shoes and two rings. The black wool overcoat is double-breasted, full length with unstructured, drop shoulders, patch pockets to the chest and cargo pockets to the lower hip area. The coat is cut to be oversized and fastens with buttons and a self waist belt. The black wool trousers are cut to sit low on the waist with a relaxed fit through the leg. The outer leg features a strip of embellishment running the length of the trousers. This embellishment is composed of brass beads and discs interspersed with faux-pearl beads. The  bra top is made of a white cotton with alternating stripes of pale yellow and mustard yellow. It has triangle shaped cups with narrow shoulder straps and an elasticated underband with clasp fastening to the reverse. The shoes are black leather lace-up Derby style shoes, with a gently pointed toe, rubber sole and small, stacked wooden heel.
