The designers all graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) in the early 1980s, gaining notoriety in 1986 when they presented their distinctive fashions together at a London tradeshow. The then unknown designers casued a stir with their radical designs and impressively refined vision, attracting industry attention that would launch their professional careers. Van Noten founded his eponymous ready-to-wear label that same year, building a critically and commercially successful luxury fashion brand that remained financially independent until 2018. Operating at the fringe of the luxury fashion industry, Van Noten's success is predicated upon the strength of his unique aesthetic, which has gained a dedicated ‘insider’ following. Unlike his Antwerp Six contemporaries, who produced moody and experimental designs, Van Noten’s work is celebrated for his use of colour, luscious textiles and wearable shapes that make a bold, but not overblown, fashion statement. Van Noten's research into historically and geographically diverse textile techniques typically underpin his designs, which are known for their rich juxtaposition of embroideries, clashing prints and unexpected colourways. In March 2024, Van Noten announced that after 38 years he would be retiring from the label he founded. \n\nThis ensemble was presented as part of Dries Van Noten's Spring-Summer 2024 womenswear collection. Comprised of an embellished dress and jacket, it demonstrates Van Noten’s idiosyncratic use of colour, combining muted shades of green and orange with purple, cream and brighter jolts of orange. The dress has a printed repeat pattern of swirling, intricate organic forms, a psychedelic-tinged pattern of a sort frequently referenced by Van Noten. Both the dress and jacket are simply cut, but enlivened with all-over embellishment: arrangements of opaque and sheer paillettes, brass beads and faux pearls that add movement and textural interest to the pieces. The ensemble is completed with cotton ankle socks featuring a geometric pattern and white shoes with an unusualy curved heel. The silk dress is a slip-style with spaghetti straps and v-neckline. The dress has a swirling all-over repeat pattern, printed in a muted palette of peach and soft green. The white shoes have a high, curved heel, pointed toe, slingback strap and a buckled, diagonal strap to the front. The socks are white and mauve knitted with a geometric pattern.
