During his time as a student, he won several awards given by the Department of Science and Art including the aforementioned Owen Jones Prize as well as two National Medals for Success in Art, a bronze in 1898 and a silver in 1900.\n\r\nThe Owen Jones Prize was established in 1878 by the Council of the Society of the Arts as the trustees of the sum of £400, presented to them by the Owen Jones Memorial Committee. The winner of the prize had to produce something that was designed in accordance with Jones’s principals of design. The prize was administered by the Science and Art Department based on the results of its annual competition and consisted of a bound copy of Owen Jones’s ‘Principals of Designs’, a bronze medal and a sum of money.\n\r\nThomas Cox won one of six prizes that were awarded in 1900 for a design for a frieze in glass mosaic. The design itself is not described or pictured, but it could be one of the two now in the V&A's collection (E.134-2025 and E.135-2025).","physicalDescription":"Bronze medal with profile portrait of Queen Victoria.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Board of Education","id":"AUTH356174"},"association":{"text":"issuer","id":"x30790"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast bronze","categories":[{"text":"Medallions","id":"THES49034"},{"text":"Awards","id":"THES284926"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2026PP6788","2026PP6789","2026PP6790","2026PP6791","2026PP6777"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SB6","shelf":"9","box":""},{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SB6","shelf":"9","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"medal","id":"AAT46025"}],[{"text":"case","id":"AAT45659"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1900","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"issued","id":"x45592"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Ailsa Carpenter","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"51","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"OWEN JONES COMPETITION, 1900 / THOMAS COX, FOR A DESIGN FOR A FRIEZE IN GLASS MOSAIC.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bronze medal in box, National Medal for Success in Art Awarded by the Board of Education, awarded to Thomas Cox for his entry into the Owen Jones Prize, cast bronze, Britain, 1900","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.139:1-2025","E.139:2-2025"],"accessionNumberNum":"139","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2025,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-13","recordCreationDate":"2024-11-12","availableToBook":false}}
