The winner of the prize had to produce something that was designed in accordance with Jones's principals of design.  The prize was administered by the Science and Art Department based on the results of its annual competition and consisted of a bound copy of Owen Jones's ‘Principals of Designs’, a bronze medal and a sum of money. This copy of Owen Jones’s  ‘Principals of Designs’ was awarded to Thomas Cox who won one of six prizes that were awarded in 1900 for a design for a frieze in glass mosaic. The design itself is not described or pictured, but it could be one of the two now in the V&A's collection (E.134-2025 and E.135-2025).\n\nLittle is known about Thomas Cox, but an article published in the Journal of the Society of the Arts documenting the recipients of the Owen Jones Prize in 1900 lists Cox as a winner and reveals that he was a student at Macclesfield School of Art.
