There are two types known - solid Agate, made by wedging coloured clays together, and ‘surface’ Agate - achieved by blending coloured slip on the surface of Queen’s ware, or a fine earthenware body. Wedgwood first produced both varieties of Agate Ware in the 1770s when it peaked in popularity. There were revivals of Agate inspired bodies in the 19th and 20th century.","physicalDescription":"Vase, earthenware, exterior decorated with agate glaze, ovoid shape, two gilded loop handles in the form of snakes, exterior ornamented with applied reliefs including acanthus and laurel leaves and beads, all embellished with gilding, vase mounted on square pedestal.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware with glazing, applied reliefs and gilding","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2025PF8081"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG1","id":"THES264736"},"free":"","case":"CA24.1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"vases","id":"AAT132254"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1775-1778","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1778-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
