(1755-1826) was a Royal Academy educated artist and sculptor who became a leading figure in European Neoclassicism. Employed from around 1775, Flaxman became one of Wedgwood’s most prolific modellers. As well as busts, plaques and medallions, Flaxman designed and modelled a set of chess pieces, demonstrating his ability with small-scale three-dimensional subjects.
